How To Register An Athlete

A parent, family member, service provider (teacher, therapist, volunteer) or individual who serves as his or her own self advocate can register for participation according to the eligibility criteria stated under the tab About SONJ Athletes.

Step 1

There are a variety of ways that your athlete can participate in Special Olympics. Your choices are based on sports, team and individual, ability to travel and availability of local training programs in your area. The strategies for participation in a Local Program are listed below.

  • Register as part of an existing local program that is managed by parents and volunteers with no direct affiliation between group and school or agency that serves athletes. Contact the Area Director for your county or SONJ Sectional Directors for assistance with identifying a program near you.
  • Register with an existing school or agency program that provides direct service to your athlete. Contact teacher/staff for information on programs/sports offered, or contact the Special Olympics New Jersey Outreach Manager for assistance in getting a program started in your school or agency.
  • Start a new Local Program by contacting Special Olympics New Jersey and receive technical support and resources to create a new program.
  • Register as an Independent Athlete (ie. Individual sports - golf, bowling, skiing, etc.)

Step 2

  • Contact Special Olympics New Jersey at or the Area Director for your county to receive your Enrollment Kit.
