Chris McMullen

Gold Medal Winner 2010 USA Games and 2011 World Summer Games

Q: Your mom is your coach, right? Are you proud of all she does for your swim team?

A: Yes, I am proud of all she has done for the Monmouth Marlins swim team.  She works hard to get all the swimmers in shape.

Q: What was it like to win 3 Special Olympic World Games Gold medals?

A:  Awesome!  It was so exciting winning 3 Gold Medals at the World Games in Athens, Greece, and swimming for the USA team. I practiced really hard for the World Games.  I swam 6 days a week, 2 hours a day.  I got to meet athletes from all over the world.  We were trading team pins, too.  My favorite pin is from a swimmer from Japan.

Q: Which is your favorite swimming event? Why?

A:  My favorite stroke is freestyle because it’s the fastest.  My favorite event is the 400-meter freestyle.  That’s 16 laps of the pool and lots of flip turns.

Q: Where is your favorite place you’ve competed? Why?

A: I loved competing in Lincoln, Nebraska, for Team NJ at the Special Olympic National Games in 2010.  Everyone cheered and cheered for us.  My whole family came to Nebraska to see me swim and cheer me on.  My teammates from New Jersey were awesome.  We took care of each other and became good friends.  We won lots of medals, too!

Q: What makes you feel proud?

A: Swimming my fastest and winning Gold Medals!  I felt very proud being the lead-off swimmer in the 400-meter freestyle relay for Team USA at the 2011 World Games in Greece.  We won the Gold Medal and came in first place by more than 2 laps of the pool.  That was awesome! I am also very proud to be going to college this year at Brookdale Community College.
