In addition to building on the core understanding of Special Olympics provided by Coaching Special Olympics Athletes, Principles of Coaching combines knowledge of sport and disabilities to provide skills to develop a coaching philosophy, build a successful program, enhance athlete confidence, teach sport skills and use effective training strategies. Sport safety protocols are also taught.

Completing this course will give coaches a gold level certification in the Coach Education System.

Taking the Course

Coaches may take the course in person or online. It is recommended to take the course in person but coaches may choose which option suits them best.

Special Olympics New Jersey provides the in-person course to coaches free of charge and encourage coaches to participate in this option for the benefit of discussion and learning with other coaches.


Follow the steps on the course instructions to access. Please note there is a $35 payment for the course.

The online course is self-guided and may be completed over multiple sittings. Please note there is a deadline to complete the course based on your enrollment date. Coaches pay for the online option themselves.
