At its annual Night of Champions, Special Olympics New Jersey honors and celebrates outstanding individuals and groups.

In the year leading up to the big event, award candidates are identified and nominated by their peers. These nominations are reviewed by a committee, and finally the award recipients are revealed. Awards categories include 13 outstanding county athletes, several volunteers, spirit awards, Special Olympics New Jersey Hall of Fame, Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame, and a Lifetime Achievement award.

The Outstanding Athlete award recognizes Special Olympics New Jersey athletes who have shown determination and dedication to training and an increased proficiency in any sport at any competition level. The award was presented by Burlington County Coordinator, Kate Maloney.

“At just 16 years old, Mikayla Johnson has faced significant challenges due to cerebral palsy, demonstrating remarkable resilience. She walks independently through the world, plays cello in her high school band, and is an active member of her sled hockey team. Mikayla also cycles with the Burlington Sprockets and swims with the Burlington County YMCA Marlins.

What truly sets her apart is her “Can Do” spirit. Her enthusiasm uplifts her teammates, filling them with joy and laughter. Mikayla is not just a competitor; she is an inspiration to all. Additionally, she is a talented flower artist, helping make the beautiful corsages and boutonnieres for our award winners tonight, created in the Floriculture Shop at her Burlington County Special Services school.”
