At its annual Night of Champions, Special Olympics New Jersey honors and celebrates outstanding individuals and groups.

In the year leading up to the big event, award candidates are identified and nominated by their peers. These nominations are reviewed by a committee, and finally the award recipients are revealed. Awards categories include 13 outstanding county athletes, several volunteers, spirit awards, Special Olympics New Jersey Hall of Fame, Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame, and a Lifetime Achievement award.

The Special Olympics Hall of Fame recognizes individuals with at least 10 years of involvement with Special Olympics New Jersey, who have advanced the Special Olympics movement in one of the categories of sports and training, fundraising, or public awareness. The award was presented by Betty Lunn, Morris & Sussex counties coordinator.

“For over 41 years, Gail Paradise has exemplified unwavering passion and commitment to the mission of Special Olympics New Jersey. As a dedicated member of the Morris and Sussex Counties Committee, she has been a driving force behind countless events, from bowling and swimming to track and field, cycling, and basketball to name a few. Her leadership in organizing the county bowling meet for more than 20 years is just one testament to her tireless efforts.

Paradise’s meticulous attention to detail has earned her the affectionate title of “Queen of the Medical Forms,” a nod to her extensive knowledge of every athlete in Morris and Sussex Counties. She understands the profound impact that Special Olympics sports have on the lives of our athletes, enriching their experiences and fostering a sense of community.

Whether at the office or in the field, Paradise dedicates her time and heart to every project she undertakes. Her commitment extends beyond mere organization; she truly invests herself in the well-being of our athletes and the success of our events.

And let’s not forget her adventurous spirit! After many invitations from her sister-in-law, Paradise finally took the plunge – literally – into the icy waters at the Polar Bear Plunge last year, showcasing her willingness to embrace new challenges.

Gail Paradise is not just a volunteer; she is a beacon of hope and inspiration for all of us. Please join me in celebrating her incredible contributions and welcoming her into the SONJ Hall of Fame!
