At its annual Night of Champions, Special Olympics New Jersey honors and celebrates outstanding individuals and groups.

In the year leading up to the big event, award candidates are identified and nominated by their peers. These nominations are reviewed by a committee, and finally the award recipients are revealed. Awards categories include 13 outstanding county athletes, several volunteers, spirit awards, Special Olympics New Jersey Hall of Fame, Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame, and a Lifetime Achievement award.

The LETR Summer Grillers received the Chief Robert Belfiore LETR Unsung Hero Award, which was created to recognize outstanding individuals who have contributed to the success of the LETR at the local, state, or community level. Their spirit, dedication, and enthusiasm are evident without the motive of any recognition. The award was presented by Kevin Burke, Director of Law Enforcement Torch Run.

“Every year, this dedicated team of LETR Summer Games Grillers braves the steamy conditions over hot grills, cooking thousands of hot dogs and hamburgers generously donated by ShopRite. Their efforts ensure that Special Olympics New Jersey athletes, Unified Partners, coaches, families, friends, volunteers, and spectators are well-fed and energized throughout the event.

This tradition has become a hallmark of Summer Games, and their unwavering commitment and hard work have made them a vital part of our community. Their dedication goes beyond just cooking; it’s about creating an atmosphere of warmth, support, and camaraderie that embodies the spirit of the Special Olympics.

Their presence at Summer Games is more than just a service. It’s a symbol of the unity and generosity that define our community. Each year, they bring smiles to countless faces, not just through the delicious food they prepare, but through their kindness and enthusiasm. Their efforts help create an environment where everyone feels welcome and valued, reinforcing the inclusive spirit of Special Olympics.

These volunteers work tirelessly behind the scenes, often without recognition, to ensure that every participant and attendee has a memorable experience. Their contribution is a testament to the power of volunteerism and the impact that a dedicated group of individuals can have on a community. “

The LETR Summer Games Grillers were represented by LETR State Committee members Gary Evangelista and Lou Hannon.
