At its annual Night of Champions, Special Olympics New Jersey honors and celebrates outstanding individuals and groups.

In the year leading up to the big event, award candidates are identified and nominated by their peers. These nominations are reviewed by a committee, and finally the award recipients are revealed. Awards categories include 13 outstanding county athletes, several volunteers, spirit awards, Special Olympics New Jersey Hall of Fame, Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame, and a Lifetime Achievement award.

Tom Kaminski received the Chief Robert Belfiore LETR Unsung Hero Award, which was created to recognize outstanding individuals who have contributed to the success of the LETR at the local, state, or community level. Their spirit, dedication, and enthusiasm are evident without the motive of any recognition. The award was presented by Kevin Burke, Director of Law Enforcement Torch Run.

“You may have heard Tom Kaminski’s voice. For over 35 years, he was the one you trusted to guide you through traffic from his “office” high above the highways in WCBS Chopper 880. But chances are you’ve also heard and seen him at New Jersey Law Enforcement Torch Run events.

He has been an integral part of the Lincoln Tunnel Challenge 5K since its inception, serving as its host for more than 30 years. His commitment to the Torch Run and Special Olympics New Jersey community extends beyond the microphone. You’ll also find him on drums as part of the house band, Dead Äire, for the Thanks4giving Dash and Splash in Asbury Park.

A proud product of Lodi, and an alum and adjunct professor at Montclair State University, Tom dedicates his time every year to support the Torch Run and Special Olympics New Jersey. Today, he resides in Cranford with his wife and sons, continuing to make a positive impact on those around him.

Tom is truly an unsung hero. His tireless efforts and unwavering dedication often go unnoticed, but they are deeply felt by everyone in our community. He embodies the spirit of selflessness and commitment, making a difference in the lives of countless individuals.
