At its annual Night of Champions, Special Olympics New Jersey honors and celebrates outstanding individuals and groups.

In the year leading up to the big event, award candidates are identified and nominated by their peers. These nominations are reviewed by a committee, and finally the award recipients are revealed. Awards categories include 13 outstanding county athletes, several volunteers, spirit awards, Special Olympics New Jersey Hall of Fame, Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame, and a Lifetime Achievement award.

The Outstanding Athlete award recognizes Special Olympics New Jersey athletes who have shown determination and dedication to training and an increased proficiency in any sport at any competition level. The award was presented by Middlesex and Union Counties Coordinator, Karen Lewicki.

“Brian Curci has been competing in Special Olympics since he was 10 years old. He is a 4-season athlete competing in Basketball, Soccer, Tennis, and Volleyball. He is a true team player and lives for Special Olympics. His competitive nature and friendly demeanor make him the perfect teammate. He leads by example and is always concerned that his teammates, and friends, are having fun.

While Curci treasures the many medals he has brought home along the way, including a gold medal in Soccer at the 2022 USA Games in Orlando, Brian is most proud of his job working part-time for Special Olympics New Jersey over the past year.”
