At its annual Night of Champions, Special Olympics New Jersey honors and celebrates outstanding individuals and groups.

In the year leading up to the big event, award candidates are identified and nominated by their peers. These nominations are reviewed by a committee, and finally the award recipients are revealed. Awards categories include 13 outstanding county athletes, several volunteers, spirit awards, Special Olympics New Jersey Hall of Fame, Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame, and a Lifetime Achievement award.

The Outstanding Athlete award recognizes Special Olympics New Jersey athletes who have shown determination and dedication to training and an increased proficiency in any sport at any competition level. The award was presented by Passaic County County Coordinator, Michele Cornell.

“Charlie Casella has been competing in bocce, bowling, and volleyball for almost 20 years. He has a tremendous support system in his family, which is always there to cheer him and his team on, no matter where they are across the state, or even in Florida! They go out of their way to do anything to help and make everyone feel welcome.

Charlie has also served proudly for many years as a member of the Special Olympics New Jersey Honor Guard and attends a Spectrum for Living day program in Ringwood.”
