At its annual Night of Champions, Special Olympics New Jersey honors and celebrates outstanding individuals and groups.
In the year leading up to the big event, award candidates are identified and nominated by their peers. These nominations are reviewed by a committee, and finally the award recipients are revealed. Awards categories include 13 outstanding county athletes, several volunteers, spirit awards, Special Olympics New Jersey Hall of Fame, Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame, and a Lifetime Achievement award.
The Outstanding Athlete award recognizes Special Olympics New Jersey athletes who have shown determination and dedication to training and an increased proficiency in any sport at any competition level. The award was presented by SONJ Chief Community Affairs Officer, Carmen Bannon.
“David Ciaccio started when he was 8 years old and now, at the young age of 57, is beginning his 49th season as a Special Olympics athlete.
Throughout his illustrious career, he has seen and done almost everything, including Alpine Skiing, Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Cycling, Floor Hockey, Swimming, and Track & Field.”
