At its annual Night of Champions, Special Olympics New Jersey honors and celebrates outstanding individuals and groups.

In the year leading up to the big event, award candidates are identified and nominated by their peers. These nominations are reviewed by a committee, and finally the award recipients are revealed. Awards categories include 13 outstanding county athletes, several volunteers, spirit awards, Special Olympics New Jersey Hall of Fame, Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame, and a Lifetime Achievement award.

The Outstanding Athlete award recognizes Special Olympics New Jersey athletes who have shown determination and dedication to training and an increased proficiency in any sport at any competition level. The award was presented by Somerset County Coordinator Stephanie Johnson.

Robert Hopkins has been competing for over 25 years and is always a constant on Alpine Ski slopes, Bowling lanes, and Cycling course. He is a hard worker who is dedicated to competing and getting better every year.

Hopkins is a positive influence on those around him and represents the true spirit of Special Olympics.”
