At its annual Night of Champions, Special Olympics New Jersey honors and celebrates outstanding individuals and groups.
In the year leading up to the big event, award candidates are identified and nominated by their peers. These nominations are reviewed by a committee, and finally the award recipients are revealed. Awards categories include 13 outstanding county athletes, several volunteers, spirit awards, Special Olympics New Jersey Hall of Fame, Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame, and a Lifetime Achievement award.
The Outstanding Athlete award recognizes Special Olympics New Jersey athletes who have shown determination and dedication to training and an increased proficiency in any sport at any competition level. The award was presented by Hudson County Coordinator, Ruben Concepcion.
“Shediel Rivas competes in Alpine Skiing, Track & Field, and both traditional and Unified Soccer with Union City High School. He is enrolled in the Life Skills Program where he hones his skills, cultivates meaningful relationships, and takes significant steps toward independence.
Beyond his academic and athletic pursuits, Rivas is a part-time food service employee for Chartwells, where he prepares breakfast and lunch meals for students in the Union City School District. His work ethic, reliability, and dedication to his community have made him a valued team member.”
