At its annual Night of Champions, Special Olympics New Jersey honors and celebrates outstanding individuals and groups.
In the year leading up to the big event, award candidates are identified and nominated by their peers. These nominations are reviewed by a committee, and finally the award recipients are revealed. Awards categories include 13 outstanding county athletes, several volunteers, spirit awards, Special Olympics New Jersey Hall of Fame, Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame, and a Lifetime Achievement award.
The Outstanding Volunteer Family Award recognizes families of Special Olympics New Jersey athletes that have demonstrated unique and outstanding support of the Special Olympics movement and athletes. The award was presented by SONJ athlete and Athlete Leadership Council member, Bobby Fredericks.
“It’s heartwarming to see volunteers discover their passion for Special Olympics, turning a one-day role at track into a lifelong commitment. Jeff and Melanie Post exemplify this journey. In the early 2000s, Jeff began volunteering at Summer Games as an athlete escort. The following year, he and Melanie returned on their own, and as many of you can imagine, became “hooked,” quickly becoming dedicated volunteers who return year after year.
In 2016, they joined the track and field committee, and helped streamline processes and procedures to improve the quality of competition. They also work very well with the Summer Games committee to ensure a great experience for all athletes, families, and volunteers.
Over the years, Jeff and Melanie have shown what it means to have a meaningful volunteer experience. They have truly become a vital part of the Special Olympics New Jersey family.“
