At its annual Night of Champions, Special Olympics New Jersey honors and celebrates outstanding individuals and groups.
In the year leading up to the big event, award candidates are identified and nominated by their peers. These nominations are reviewed by a committee, and finally the award recipients are revealed. Awards categories include 13 outstanding county athletes, several volunteers, spirit awards, Special Olympics New Jersey Hall of Fame, Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame, and a Lifetime Achievement award.
The Outstanding Volunteer Group Award recognizes exemplary voluntary service by a group to Special Olympics New Jersey. The award was presented by Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland County Coordinator Linda Cobb.
“The Ocean City Recreation Department has been hosting our counties’ swim meets for quite some time and, in recent years, adding hosting our track and field competitions as well as the annual SONJ Walk.
The dedication of this group of volunteers is exemplary. They are always well prepared for each event but also proactively recruit residents to assist with volunteering. Additionally, they work with local fire and police departments to help with our awards ceremonies.
The effort involved in preparing for these events, along with the organization required for setting up and breaking down the venues, is amazing. They are always eager and ready to support SONJ in ensuring an exceptional experience for both athletes and spectators alike.”
