At its annual Night of Champions, Special Olympics New Jersey honors and celebrates outstanding individuals and groups.

In the year leading up to the big event, award candidates are identified and nominated by their peers. These nominations are reviewed by a committee, and finally the award recipients are revealed. Awards categories include 13 outstanding county athletes, several volunteers, spirit awards, Special Olympics New Jersey Hall of Fame, Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame, and a Lifetime Achievement award.

The S. Michael Higgins Special Olympics Scholarship Award recognizes Special Olympics New Jersey athletes who have demonstrated dedication to sport through a commitment to training. The award was presented by long-time volunteer, official, and former Board of Trustees member, Barbara Wallace.

“Catherine Reischman is a truly remarkable athlete whose dedication to Special Olympics New Jersey spans nearly two decades. Over the years, she has excelled in equestrian, golf, skiing, and swimming.

She is not only accomplished in athletics but also excels as a fundraiser. Every year, she volunteers for the Perlman Cup and Higgins Classic Golf fundraisers. She was also the second highest fundraiser for Team NJ at the 2022 USA Games in Orlando, Florida. She won a silver medal in the challenging 200 Individual Medley at the games, which was a remarkable achievement.

Not only is she dedicated to sports and fundraising, but she also puts in the effort to maintain her fitness throughout the year. Her daily routine includes walking over 15,000 steps, practicing yoga and Pilates, and working with a personal trainer to improve her strength and coordination. It is this unwavering focus and commitment to training that has led to her deserving tonight’s award. She is a true inspiration to us all.”
