At its annual Night of Champions, Special Olympics New Jersey honors and celebrates outstanding individuals and groups.

In the year leading up to the big event, award candidates are identified and nominated by their peers. These nominations are reviewed by a committee, and finally the award recipients are revealed. Awards categories include 13 outstanding county athletes, several volunteers, spirit awards, Special Olympics New Jersey Hall of Fame, Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame, and a Lifetime Achievement award.

The Special Olympics Hall of Fame recognizes individuals with at least 10 years of involvement with Special Olympics New Jersey, who have advanced the Special Olympics movement in one of the categories of sports and training, fundraising, or public awareness. The award was presented by Regional Director East, Chris Tobin.

“Colleen has been an inspiring athlete for the past 25 years, actively participating in bocce, golf, and bowling at both the local and state levels. Her journey in sports has been remarkable, but what truly sets Colleen apart is her incredible resilience.

Colleen has faced more adversity than anyone I have ever known, yet she maintains the most positive outlook on life. Her ability to rise above challenges is nothing short of amazing. Despite the obstacles she has encountered, Colleen continues to shine brightly, embodying the same spirit of perseverance and hope that founded the Special Olympics movement.

Where do I even begin with her accomplishments? There is very little Colleen has not achieved in her years as an athlete, coach, official, committee and board of trustees member, and chairperson of the Athlete Leadership Council. Her commitment to leadership and mentorship of her fellow athletes is remarkable. Her passion to ensure the voices of athletes are heard and valued is unmatched, much like her singing of the National Anthem. Her beautiful voice has graced many events, bringing joy to all who hear her.

As her Area Director, I had the privilege of watching Colleen grow into the remarkable person she is today. Her ability to connect with others and advocate for acceptance and inclusion is truly inspiring. Colleen is not only passionate about Special Olympics; she shares that passion with her teammates and competitors, always giving her all while helping others achieve their goals. Colleen, your dedication, and spirit bring joy to everyone around you, especially me.

If Eunice Kennedy Shriver was here today to witness how far her movement has come through athletes like you, her heart would be filled with the same pride and admiration I have saying:

Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in celebrating the incredible contributions and welcome Colleen Ciecura into the SONJ Hall of Fame!”
-Jeri Hickey, County Coordinator
