About us

Special Olympics New Jersey provides year-round sports training and competition opportunities in over 24 sports for people with intellectual disabilities ages 8 and older.


As a sports organization, a certain level of commitment (attending practices and competitions) is necessary to participate.  With practice and competition comes a great sense of self confidence and joy that is shared with family and community.  We hope that Special Olympics New Jersey is a good fit for the needs you are looking for.

Completing This Form
Please complete the following form to let us know about your interest in Special Olympics New Jersey. This is an interest form only.  Completing this form does not register you as a Special Olympics athlete. 

**Based on the information you provide, we will send a Participation Packet to your email or mailing address.  This packet must be completed correctly, as instructed on the checklist provided with the packet.  The Area Director will contact you via email or mailing address.

Athlete Information




Age is required to assist in placing the athlete with the appropriate team
Sport Interest

  • Special Olympics offers four sport training and competition seasons: \

  • Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer.  

  • The competition calendar runs from September through June.  

  • The sport(s) that you may be interested in may not have openings due to the competition calendar.  For example if you are interested in soccer but are inquiring in February, you will likely have to wait a few months to join a program and start practice.

Please be aware that some sports may not be available in your county but you are welcome to participate in another county if it is available.

Sport Training Seasons
Each sport training season consists of a training period of a minimum of 8 weeks and then competition.  Team sports such as soccer, basketball, flag football, floor hockey, volleyball, softball, and bowling also require weekly participation in league competitions. 




Travel and Time Commitment
Being involved in Special Olympics sports training and competition requires some travel and time commitment.  Please provide us with some information regarding your ability/willingness to travel to practices and competitions.


Athlete Participation Packet and Medical Form
Each athlete is required to have a completed Special Olympics New Jersey Participation Packet on file prior to beginning training.  The Participation Packet includes consent forms and a Special Olympics New Jersey sports medical form that needs to be completed by the athlete's physician and his/her guardian. These forms are valid for three years. Once the packet and medical form are completed and signed, mail a copy to the Area Director and keep several copies for your records.  You will need to give a copy to your child's coach at the beginning of each season.
