It was a beautiful day on Sunday, May 7, 2023 for the 2023 Lincoln Tunnel Challenge 5K in Weekawken, NJ! The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey once again closed down the south end of the Lincoln Tunnel for the morning to host this annual fundraiser benefitting Special Olympics New Jersey! This unique event featured over 1,968 runners and raised $155,000! Thank you to all who participated, volunteered, and sponsored!
The Lincoln Tunnel is actually 3 separate tunnels and the south tunnel was closed down and cleaned for this event. The distance running through the tunnel from NJ to NY and back is the 5K path. The run was divided into two waves, including an “elite” wave of runners who could finish in under 30 minutes, then the remainder of the runners and walkers took off for their 5K in wave two shortly after. Once everything was wrapped up, the Port Authority prepared and re-open the tunnel by 11:00 a.m. for commuters.
John Elliott from CBS2 New York was there all day reporting live!
