In the spirit of Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s original camp, which started five years before the Special Olympics movement began, Special Olympics New Jersey hosted its annual Camp Shriver. Over the course of five weeks, more than 150 campers met old friends, made new ones, and participated in activities focused on fitness, sports, fun, wellness, and learning.
Sports offered to all campers covered a wide range: Golf, pickleball, basketball, tennis, kickball, football, floor hockey, wiffleball, cornhole and soccer. Yoga sessions and workouts in the Wawa fitness center added fitness and wellness to the schedules.
In the aptly named Eunice Kennedy Shriver meeting room, participants were taught in how to read nutrition labels and recognize the amount of sugar in drinks thanks to our Health Volunteers. In addition to that they learned about the physical and mental benefits of healthy nutrition.
“Camp Shriver provided me with an invaluable opportunity to work along side athletes and share my passion of nutrition with them. Getting to know the athletes and seeing their excitement while learning about nutrition is contagious and truly a rewarding experience.” – Emily Beene, RDN

As if the campers had not had enough fun with the activities, they also had the opportunity to watch a movie, and on hot days there may or may not have been some ice cream breaks. Who doesn’t like that?
From campers to volunteers, from clinicians to counselors: We all cannot wait for next Camp Shriver!
