Asbury Park beach was the meeting ground for more than 450 athletes, volunteers, and sponsors for the 8th annual One More Tri on September 8, 2019. This “Unified Triathalon” featured athletes with and without disabilities. The weather was ideal and the triathletes conquered the waves, the street, and the boardwalk as they swam, rode, and ran to the finish line. Athleticism, perseverance, and determination was truly on display for a Sunday morning.
30 Special Olympics athletes and partners participated in the 2019 One More Tri. The event’s premise of being accessible to racers from all levels has led to the increase in athlete participation. Over the years, more race options have been made available for athletes – they can choose to complete in all three acts or just two, and there are several distance options as well.
Participants were given the option to have an “angel” which are volunteers who competed right alongside those that need a little extra guidance. The overall commitment to accessibility and the dedication of volunteers has made One More Tri a must for any triathlete!
Many volunteers come back year after year for this Unified triathlon. For a group like Monmouth University, the event has become a team-wide staple. It’s great to see so many college students giving up their Sunday mornings to help others and make the day a memorable one.
