On Thursday, July 4th, the 6th annual Statue of Liberty 5K took place on Liberty Island. The ONLY official race around the Statue of Liberty, this exclusive event featured 315 runners raising over $38,000 for Special Olympics New Jersey athletes. What better way to celebrate America’s freedom than raising money and celebrating those with intellectual disabilities?!
Before the barbeques, parades, and fireworks, participants and volunteers braved the early morning at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, NJ. Check-in officially opened at 5:00 am, ferry screening began at 6:00 am, and the ferry departed for Liberty Island at 6:45 am with the 5K beginning at 7:15 am. The early morning was soon forgotten with the sunrise views and fresh air of a near-empty Liberty Island.
This special and unique event would not have been possible without support from participants and volunteers, as well as the Law Enforcement Torch Run. Special thanks go to Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health for sponsoring the race and promoting the Special Olympics movement, and Statue Cruises for providing the ferries.
Hi,
The link to the “event photos” from the 2019 Runners Shine Alongside Lady Liberty page is not working. Please let us know when it is fixed since son and SONJ athlete Alex Feeley participated and really wanted to see the pictures from the day.
Thanks,
Cecilia
