This week we will be highlighting the Unified program at Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ)!
Formally known as Rowan College of Gloucester County (RCGC), RCSJ Unified began six years ago after discovering the need for the program on campus. The program includes SONJ athletes from the community but also partners with the college’s ACT Program – Adult Center for Transition. In the ACT program, socialization and life skills opportunities can be accessed through RCSJ clubs and activities including Unified Sports/Special Olympics.
After two years of Unified Sports at RCSJ, the administration established the student executive board in order to give students the opportunity to lead the club. RCSJ Unified has blossomed each year, maintaining a team of about fifty participants! This program promotes inclusion, teamwork, and kindness during the fall and spring semesters on and off the field.
Throughout the year, the program participates in a variety of activities such as themed celebrations, professional sports games (Go Philadelphia 76ers!), hosting Unified Night (check out the videos below), and hosting Camp Shriver on campus. Camp began at RCSJ about three years ago due its location – the ease of access for many athletes and individuals proved to be very beneficial.
Outside of practice, RCSJ Unified continues to connect and support one another through social media or attending various events. They even have gotten together for team hangouts on Zoom over the past few weeks!
Before ending practice, the RCSJ campus is sure to hear the team shout, “1, 2, 3…Unified!
